Marijuana Grow Ops
Filed under Alternative MedicineMay 3Houses and buildings used by marijuana growers are referred to as grow ops. If the grow op isn in a house it’s called a grow house. Police estimate that there are more than 50,000 grow ops across Canada.
The number keeps growing. Every community in the country is exposed to the risks from marijuana grow ops. They operate in every city, town and rural area across Canada. They are in big cities and little towns.
Traditionally they have been situated in residential neighbourhoods, but they have spread to commercial warehouses and agricultural barns. In large metropolitan areas the police have found several clustered in the same area - sometimes even on the same street.
With time the growers gain more knowledge and experience. To avoid getting caught they take great pains to make the house look lived in. Often crop sitters will live in the house, giving it a semblance of normalcy.
Many times rented properties are preferred, but recently growers have been buying properties for grow op purposes. Some are even built specially for the industry with additional features to suppress damage from mold and humidity.
They come in all sizes. Small grow ops in a basement closet or huge ones in an industrial size greenhouse - they are everywhere. The largest one reported by police was in Brampton, Ontario, in a de-comissioned brewery. It contained 25,000 plants worth an estimated 30 million dollars. This is not a typical grow op.
While the industry is present in all parts of the country, BC, Quebec and Ontario are the largest producers. Techniques change from area to area. In Quebec 60% of the crop is outdoor, while in BC 70% is indoor.
Because thre is a lot of money to be made marijuana growing has become widespread. relatively speaking the risks are quite low. Punishment is negligible. It has, as a result, become a million dollar industry.
As this growth has occurred organized crime has taken a more prominent role in the industry. A small initial investment can produce a huge return from plants that can provide three to four harvest per year. With the popularity of the drug and the increasing acceptance of it we can be safe in assuming grow ops are here for a while.

What’s the best approach to marijuana harvesting? Take one bud at a time? Or harvest everything all at once?
Before I answer let me get one thing out of the way. Growing marijuana is legal in many places, and illegal in some. It’s fair to say that though most of the United States the law is unclear. Federally it is against the law, but in Alaska, for example, you are allowed to grow up to 24 plants and possess 1/4 pound of marijuana. In Canada it is legal to grow medical marijuana.
Now that’s out of the way let’s get back to the question. Should you harvest everything at once? Or should you clip the plant bud by bud?
I prefer to harvest one bud at a time, but that’s assuming a small, indoor grow. It’s best to let each bud mature before you clip it. I find the buds at the top of the plant mature first and grow biggest. The lower buds need more time.
Why would you do otherwise? If you’ve got a big crop it might make sense to do it all at once. If you’re growing outside in a hard to reach area the same thing may apply.
You may have to harvest all at once for other reasons as well. For example, if you think someone has discovered your secret marijuana garden and you’re afraid that they’re about to raid it you should harvest all at once. Or, if you’re outside and the weather is turning cold and the plants are beginning to be frost damaged, again, harvest all at once. If mold sets in due to wet weather there is no sense in waiting. Salvage the crop.
If you don’t have to, then wait. The budding process is a process, and it takes time. It doesn’t happen all at once, and not all buds develop at the same pace. When you see them start to dry up and the hairs turn red, clip them.
But, each bud does it at a different time. Marijuana (and other plants) tends to concentrate it’s growing power on the highest tips of the plant. That means the first buds tend to develop at the top, and they tend to be the biggest.
This trait can be utilized to change how the plant grows. Bending the top below the rest of the pplant will encourage lower nodes to develop bigger buds. That’s a different subject.
But, if you clip off the top cola then you are. by default, manipulating the growth hormone. It will have to go to the lower buds. They will grow bigger and develop some more.
So, don’t just clip the cola at it’s base. Take the stem down to the next node or bud. There are two reasons. One, the hormone will go to the highest point left on the plant, and it will find a bud there. Two, the stem left on the harvested bud improves curing.
So, should you harvest cannabis all at once? My answer is only if you have to. Otherwise harvest each bud when it’s ready. You’ll be happier with the results and you’ll get more bud.
