Believe it or not, sauna bathing actually forces the body to release beta-endorphin in larger volumes than even most normal forms of exercise. Maybe this explains why the people of Finland have such a great love for it!

    Other ways in which hot sauna use may assist in reducing depression is through the release of noradrenaline or norepinephrine. Noradrenaline (norepinephrine) is a brain chemical that has been the target of many pharmaceutical drugs for depression as well as a few other conditions. It is also released in great quantities during stress from heat, and consequently might be indicative that the sauna might be used one day for similar therapeutic purposes. As mentioned earlier, enhanced insulin control is a benefit of use of the sauna, and some scientific studies have suggested that this might be a component of depression management also.

    In most cases, stress is unwanted and potentially dangerous. Some stress, though, is needed to stimulate us and prevent us from getting bored. People often find risky and dangerous activities stimulating, which is why extreme sports are so popular. Such activities are usually defined as exciting rather than stressful, all because they’re done voluntarily and the conditions are usually controlled. When we have no say in the matter, it feels more like stress, which is a clue that stress is closely related to feelings of being out of control. If we change our point of view, it may be possible to redefine stress as an interesting and challenging situation.

    In some cases, stress can make people dangerous, especially when they’re behind the wheel of a vehicle. When we talk about incidents of road rage, we’re really talking about drivers who can’t control their stress levels and act out. There’s no doubt that driving can be annoying, frustrating and stressful, but it’s also true that you can’t do anything about most of these situations, so you may as well learn to live with them. Drivers who let conditions on the road stress them out are more likely to get into accidents, and even if they manage to avoid this, they’re putting their health at risk by letting everyday conditions like traffic and the actions of other drivers get under their skin.

    Doctors and researchers still don’t agree whether or not stress actually causes diseases such as cancer, but at the very least it seems that it can make it harder to recover from chronic illnesses. Learning stress management exercises, for example, has been proven effective at controlling cancer and reducing the likelihood that it will come back or spread to other locations. Some people believe that there’s a certain type of “cancer personality,” people who suppress their emotions, but this hasn’t been proven. Learning how to manage stress, however, may reduce your symptoms and speed up recovery.

    No matter what kind of consequences stress may be causing for you, you can be sure that managing this issue could help you in many ways. No matter what particular effects of stress you may be experiencing, you can almost always improve the quality of your life by reducing the amount of stress in it.
