Each and every day our bodies are having to endure amazing amounts of stress. While enduring this stress your body is also adapting to it. This process is called plasticity. With out plasticity we would probably all be dead because our body’s would not be able to handle all of the extra stressors. Plasticity is just what it sounds like, its the plastic nature of our bodies to mold themselves to the environmental stimuli. An example of this is a woman who wears high heels her whole life. Eventually her low back must mold to the stress of the heel and she will most likely develop low back pain. This is a phenomenon that I see every single day in my practice.
Plastic changes do not happen quickly and can even take many years to develop. One area that I see plasticity daily is in the spine. If some one has poor postures for many years that stress will deform the spine. This can turn into low back pain, headaches, and even TMJ! Thankfully plasticity also can be used for good.
